1. At the conference I received the advice to choose one country to compare the US to instead of three. I was narrowed down even more to focus on only a few aspects of the systems such as teacher training, test scores and time periods in school. They also asked helped me think of what success is based off of. Is it based off school grades, or wether or not they go to college, or get a job out of college, ect.
2. I think the most helpful advise I received was to narrow it down to one country instead of 3. This will make it much less broad and easier for me.
3. I think the least helpful was the question "what is success", not because it is a bad question but because I had already thought about it and need to do more research obviously.
4. I think it was because it gave me a better understanding of the assignment as a whole. I know where to take my paper now, where before I was clueless. I also got to hear many ideas that could benefit me and I was able to help my classmates at the same time.
5. I think all of my questions were answered quite well.
6. I need to change my introduction to better explain what my goals in the paper are. I also need to stick with one theme and better relate them to the sources I chose. I focused more on the first source, so I need to explain more on the other sources. I also need to add a works cited page at the end. I thought the suggestions on this paper were much better then the ones she posted on the writing history because they had more depth to them.
I can relate to your answer to question 2. My conference group helped me a lot with narrowing down my topic also. I had 3 different classes I was going to break down but we concluded that only 1 would be best. I can the conference helped many people with narrowing down their topics so that it'll be easier on us to find research and sources.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Lynnsey, having found that my great big idea really was shaped and gratefully shrunk down to size by the incredible feedback I received in conference.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to ask you how you decided to measure academic success in either country you'll compare. Did you decide to use GPA or graduation rates? After thinking about it, I'm not sure many other statistics will be comparable to one another because of the drastic differences in the two school structures. Let me know what you decide! Either way, it seems like a fascinating topic and I look forward to seeing what your research yields! Best of luck!
I, as well, can related to number 2. My group helped me narrow down my topic to a more streamlined question. If we were to stay with a broad topic we would be writing a dissertation. This will allow us to go more in depth and be able to correlate articles we find just like in our exploratory essay.
